Overview
Donations to the Riley Children's Hospital make care accessible to families in need by providing life-changing pediatric research, exceptional care and the experts who make it happen. The Riley Children's Foundation contracted us to create an exciting interactive experience that provides a peak into areas of the hospital previously inaccessible and create positive messaging to assist in raising funds for further projects and staffing.

Challenge
Staffing, research, and construction are donor funded at Riley Children's Hospital. How can we encourage philanthropy with an interactive experience and create a connection with the hospital in ways previously unattainable?

Project Details

“I would love to have an experience we could show at fundraisers.”
The Riley Children’s Foundation annually raises more than $30 million to support critical programs that help children. It is the only nationally ranked children’s hospital in the state of Indiana, and employs physicians from every area of expertise in child care.

Without the accomplishments of the foundation to raise funds each year from their generous donors the Riley Children’s Hospital would not be able to employ the world class staff or be able to afford the critical research that makes them one of the nation’s leading pediatric research programs.

Our research led us to create a virtual experience that would give donors a unique opportunity to hear the personal experience of a former patient and their family while peeking into areas of the hospital inaccessible to the public.
During our discovery phase I wanted to better understand donors as our potential users. I researched these questions
Research Goals
  • What compels a person to become a donor?
  • How do donors choose where to give?
Conclusions
  • Philanthropists help others by giving money for a purpose or cause benefitting people they don't personally know
  • People donate typically for three reasons:
  • Purely altruistic – They value the social good.
  • “Impurely” altruistic – They like knowing they contribute to the social good.
  • Non-altruistic – They benefit themselves.
  • People are more likely to give to a cause when:
  • They believe the recipient is worthy of the donation
  • The cause aligns with the donor’s personal moral values.
  • The donor empathizes with the recipient(s) of the donation.

Discovery
Our initial whiteboarding sessions began with creating a few concepts on the kinds of experiences we could create. Once we knew we were creating a virtual experience for fundraising events we discussed what sort of stories we could create.

We interacted with several virtual experiences designed to evoke compassion and analyzed what strengths they had and where opportunities remained. We researched our users and examined what drives people to donate. We concluded that our experience needed to focus on two types of donors: donors who give with their heads and donors who give with their hearts.

To connect with donors driven by their desire to contribute to the social good our first experience would be a story driven by compassion for a former patient and their family. Giving access to their room and a glimpse into their lives while they stayed at the hospital allowed our users to hear how their funds directly impacted their lives.

To connect with the donors who wanted physical evidence to see how their contributions benefitted the hospital our second experience would show the construction of the new maternity wing of the hospital and the layout of the maternity room. As opposed to birthing in the trauma hospital nearby and rushing the baby to Riley, mothers would be able to give birth for the first time directly in the Riley hospital and stay with the child. Both mother and child could be cared for by the staff and stay together in the room. Additionally the experience would discuss how funding enabled Riley to stretch their influence providing off-campus locations over the state of Indiana.

The Challenges

Patient Privacy
Our 3D modeling team needed photographs and measurements of the hospital room to create a realistic virtual portrayal of the space, however HIPAA laws required us to be cautious with any information within the hospital to protect patient privacy.
Solution
We were granted access to an empty room and made all efforts to be considerate of current patients in the hospital.
New Medium
Virtual reality is a revolutionary environment that requires us to consider users of all technical proficiency levels. Typical patrons attending a fundraiser would likely have never interacted in a virtual experience, and may be overwhelmed in the new environment.
Solution
User testing consisted of numerous rounds with new users with little to no technical proficiency. We created an onboarding process introducing the user to the headset and controller when they first put it on, and would not continue until they clicked the continue button. Visual and auditory signals were included in every interaction creating helpful cues to walk the user through the experience.
Limited Technology
Our headsets were restricted to rotating on a point using 3 degrees of freedom (3 DoF). Users could not move around in a space and explore the room fully.
Solution
Predefined locations with interactions were created. When the user clicked a location they seamlessly moved across the room in a quick and gentle fade out to avoid motion sickness.

The Work

The following is a video preview for the first experience we created.

Results

The virtual experience was added to the events before the pandemic and feedback from the event staff was overwhelmingly positive. Training was an important part of this experience. The volunteers responsible for the patrons using the experience needed to understand how the headset and controllers worked, and how to interact with the experience before they could instruct others how to use the equipment.

This project tied together several passions for me. I believe virtual and extended reality will one day be a part of every day life. In 2019 the technology was making an exciting leap forward and I got to be a part of creating the exciting new experiences that were introduced to a whole new demographic. I really enjoyed concepting, storyboarding and developing this project with my teammates and am eager to create more innovative experiences like this in the future.
